Installing WinAllied on a network allows multiple users to share and access the same client and proposal information. The Network installation is divided into two steps, the Network Server Installation and the Network Client Installation. BOTH installations should always be done for any installation or upgrade to make sure that the program and datafiles are properly configured. This document is divided into four sections: 1. Installing WinAllied Network Server (New Installation) 2. Upgrading WinAllied Network Server Installation 3. Installing WinAllied Network Client 4. Troubleshooting ***IMPORTANT! YOU MUST ALWAYS DO A NETWORK SERVER INSTALLATION FIRST!!!!**** ==================================================================== Section 1 Installing WinAllied Network Server (New Installation) ==================================================================== The Network Server installation does not need to be run on the server. Installation of the Network Client may take several minutes. ==================================================================== Section 4 Troubleshooting ==================================================================== Q. The "Searching for Network Server location. This may take several minutes, please be patient." message has been on my screen for a long time, and when I click on 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' I get a message that says the program is not responding. A. The program is searching all local hard drives and network drives for a Network Server installation. It is normal for 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' to display the "Not Responding" message while it is doing this. The length of time it takes to search these drives depends on several factors like available RAM, CPU speed, Network Speed and the size of the drives to be searched. A 5 to 10 minutes search time is not unusual on slower systems or large networks. If the length of time is excessive, you can abort the program and select 'No' to the "Search for Network Server?" dialog and select the location manually, however using the search is recommended as this prevents most network installation problems. Q. I'm getting a 'Bad Database Version' error when I start WinAllied and I can't run the program. A. There are several possible reasons: The Network Client is attempting to connect to an older version of the Network Server Database. This can happen if the network client installation is run before the network server or if the network server installation is performed incorrectly and multiple versions are present again causing the client to connect to the wrong database. Running the Network Server install if you haven't already done so will usually fix this problem. If you think you might have multiple Network Server databases installed, review the question 'How do I search for and remove server installations?' Another reason is running an older Network Client to a new database. This can happen if the network server installation is run and the Network Client installation isn't, or for the same multiple Network server database problem listed above. Q. How do I search for and remove multiple server installations? A. The network server install uses a marker file called WinALL41NDB.txt which is placed in the same folder as the shared database. If multiple copies of this file exist, the Network Client won't know which folder contains the correct version of the database that it should connect to and may select the wrong one. Perform the following steps to search for multiple database versions: *Note: steps may vary slightly depending on which version of Windows you are using. 1. Click on 'Start' and then 'Search' or 'Find' and then select 'File and Folders' 2. In 'Search for files or folders named:' put in the marker file name, WinALL41NDB.txt. 3. In 'Look In:' Select 'My Computer' 4. Click Search 5. After the search is complete, note how many copies of this file exist. If more then one copy exists, all extra copies must be removed in order for the software installations to perform correctly. ***Note: Determining the correct folder to delete requires special consideration if you need to preserve any of your data from previous version of WinAllied. Deleting the wrong folder could result in loss of data. Please contact us if you have any questions!!! Q. HELP!! I Still Can't get this running! A.
